India's move towards 100 percent electric mobility may happen in multiple ways. One of them could be through retrofitment of vehicles with internal combustion engine (ICE) or full conversion from ICE to pure electric. That will be, if a draft notification by the ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) becomes a law.

In a draft notification issued today, the MoRTH has invited  'objections and suggestions from general public' on proposed amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 regarding retro fitment of electric kits to motor vehicles.

According to the draft amendment , electrification through retrofitment of hybrid electric system kit or full conversion of motor vehicles with fitment of pure electric system kit have been proposed. For the former, motor vehicles in M (passenger vehicles) and N (goods carrier) categories are being covered, and for the latter L (two/three-wheeler), M, N1 and N2 category vehicles are being proposed.

If the proposal turns into law, it will open up new business avenues in the Indian automotive industry.
