Before Anand Mimani sold alternate-fuel trucks, he spent three years buying them. It turns out that matters.
The battery weighs 2.8 tonnes. At one of Blue Energy Motors' swap stations along the Mumbai–Pune corridor, it waits in a rack with its charged siblings; freight in its own right, indifferent and enormous until a 55-tonne electric truck pulls in off the highway. Then, in about five minutes, a machine lifts the depleted battery out and lowers a full one in, and the truck pulls away again toward the gates of Jawaharlal Nehru Port, carrying steel or cement or containers, the way diesel trucks have carried them for a century.
