Daimler India Opens Healthcare Clinic for Truck Drivers in Tamil Nadu

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG, inaugurated a Physiotherapy and Primary Healthcare Clinic for truck drivers and underserved communities in Sangagiri on April 2, 2026. The facility was established in partnership with Smile Foundation, a nonprofit development organization operating across 27 Indian states.

The clinic is expected to serve approximately 13,500 beneficiaries, with more than 70 percent drawn from the local trucking community. Sangagiri serves as a key trucking hub in Tamil Nadu, making it a strategic location for an initiative aimed at improving healthcare access for long-haul drivers who frequently face barriers to regular medical care.

Services available at the clinic include physiotherapy, outpatient consultations, eye check-ups, preventive health screenings, and referral support for advanced treatment. The facility will operate six days a week and will be staffed by doctors, physiotherapists, optometrists, and community mobilisers. A digital patient management system will be used to support monitoring and continuity of care.

The initiative addresses health challenges commonly reported among commercial drivers, including musculoskeletal disorders, fatigue, and lifestyle-related conditions. Industry data suggests many drivers delay seeking treatment until conditions worsen, a pattern DICV and Smile Foundation say they aim to reverse through early intervention and preventive care programs.

Michael Moebius, President and Chief Procurement & Supply Chain Officer at DICV, stated that the company views driver health as directly linked to road safety, noting that healthier drivers contribute to better outcomes for all road users. Santanu Mishra, Co-founder of Smile Foundation, described the initiative as a step toward addressing long-standing gaps in healthcare access for the logistics workforce.

DICV manufactures and sells trucks and buses under the BharatBenz brand from its manufacturing plant in Oragadam, near Chennai, and exports to more than 60 markets across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Smile Foundation reports it directly benefits over 2.5 million children and families annually through programs spanning education, healthcare, livelihood, and women's empowerment.
