BNCAP introduces safety rating stickers for cars, SUVs

The Government of India’s Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP) has introduced new safety-rated QR code stickers for cars and SUVs. These stickers will be seen on every single new vehicle that has been crash tested under BNCAP norms.

According to the government’s crash testing body, these stickers will help ensure the vehicle buyer is made aware about the safety rating of the vehicle as tested by BNCAP.

Each sticker will have a fixed format that will include the manufacturer’s name, the vehicle name, the date of testing and the star ratings for adult as well as child protection. The sticker will also have a QR code, which, on scanning would reveal comprehensive details of the crash test for that particular vehicle.

Since the introduction of BNCAP in October 2023, only a few SUVs from Tata Motors’ stable have undergone the BNCAP crash tests. These include the Harrier, Safari, Nexon EV and the Punch EV.

All of these models have been awarded 5-star ratings by Bharat NCAP for both adult and child occupant safety. Maruti and Hyundai SUVs have been rumored to have undergone BNCAP testing, although their results have not been made public yet.
