Nissan Motor India launched the 2017 Nissan GT-R in India yesterday. The Japanese carmaker’s flagship sports car is priced at Rs 1.99 crore (ex-showroom, New Delhi) in European-spec Premium Edition. Bookings opened on September 1, 2016, for a down payment of Rs 25 lakh. The car will initially be sold through Delhi only.

The supercar was originally launched in Japan in 2007. The new 2017 model is powered by a hand-built 3.8-litre V6 24-valve twin-turbocharged engine that gets a small bump-up in power to 570hp at 6800rpm and 637Nm of torque. All the power is sent to the road via a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission and an all-wheel-drive layout. The engine breathes through a titanium exhaust system. The carmaker claims a sub-3-second time for the 0-100kph sprint with a top speed of 315kph.

Unlike most cars in its league, the GT-R is a 2+2 seater. The car has a Bose audio system with 11 speakers and a noise cancellation feature to reduce wind and road noise.

Speaking at the launch in Mumbai, Guillaume Sicard, president – Nissan India Operations, said, “The GT-R is a very special car for Nissan and we are delighted to add it to our Indian line-up. It is the epitome of Nissan’s technology and design, and demonstrates our brand promise of 'Innovation and Excitement'. It also continues our commitment to our Indian customers to offer an evolving range of dynamic and exciting new models. The GT-R will give a great boost to the Nissan brand in India and is guaranteed to turn many heads.”

Presenting the new car in India, Hiroshi Tamura, Nissan Motor Corporation’s chief product specialist for the GT-R, said, “We have continued to push the GT-R’s performance boundaries to the outer limits making it even more potent than before. At the same time, we have also added refinement to take the driving pleasure to an entirely new level. India is a new market for the GT-R and we’re proud to bring what we feel is the ‘ultimate GT’, possessing amazing performance, comfort and a rich racing heritage”.

The 2017 Nissan GT-R is produced at Nissan’s state-of-the-art plant in Tochigi, Japan, and will be brought to India as a CBU (Completely Built-up Unit). It will be sold exclusively through the Nissan Dealership in Noida, National Capital Region. This dealership will also house India’s first Nissan High Performance Centre (NHPC), which will be solely responsible for the service of the car.

The Nissan GT-R has quite a following in India with a few units being officially imported and some being brought in through the grey market. Nissan is not looking for any volumes even by supercar standards but counting on it to give the Nissan brand a much-needed boost in India.
