Mahindra & Mahindra has launched its flagship Alturas G4 SUV in India at Rs 26.95 lakh. Essentially a rebadged, second-generation Ssangyong Rexton, the Alturas is available as a 2WD variant and a top-spec 4WD trim that costs Rs 29.95 lakh (ex-showroom). These are introductory prices.

The Alturas uses a ladder-frame chassis and is larger in every dimension than its predecessor, the Rexton. The SUV is 4,850mm long, 1,960mm wide, 1,825mm itall and has a 2,865mm long wheelbase. The ground clearance too, at 244mm, is higher than the old car.

Powering the Alturas G4 is a new 2.2-litre diesel engine by Ssangyong which develops 180.5hp at 4000rpm and 420Nm of torque at 1600-2600rpm. The SUV uses a 7-speed Gronic automatic gearbox borrowed from Mercedes. The Alturas is also equipped with a shift-on-the-fly, four-wheel-drive system that can be operated via a round chrome knob situated behind the gear lever.

Features on offer with the top-spec Alturas G4 are an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 7-inch multi- information display, quilted nappa leather seats, electronic parking brake, a sunroof, a 360-degree camera, HID headlamps with LED DRLs, powered tailgate and a two-zone climate control. Additionally, the front seats are ventilated with the driver’s seat getting powered adjustability and a memory function.

Speaking at the launch in Jaipur, Dr Pawan Goenka, managing director, Mahindra & Mahindra, said, “The launch of the Alturas G4 is a significant moment in the automotive journey of Mahindra which will take the brand to the next level. With the Alturas G4, we have decided to adopt an endorsed brand strategy which will heighten brand desirability and aspiration. The product is the epitome of luxury in every sense. Therefore, we believe the Alturas G4 aptly redefines royalty which is also its positioning.”

Rajan Wadhera, president – Automotive Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra, said: “The Alturas G4, with its excellent proposition of imposing design, exquisite interiors, state-of-the-art technology, exhilarating performance and unmatched safety, all at an attractive price point, is poised to redefine the high-end SUV segment. It is our most luxurious offering and comes with a host of technology and safety features such as the 3D Around View Camera system, Easy Access Mode, Ventilated Seats, many of which are not available in vehicles at a similar price range.”

The Alturas G4 will be sold from Mahindra’s new World of SUVs showrooms. Pricing for the old Rexton was Rs 24.25 lakh for the RX 6 and Rs 25.99 lakh for the RX7 variant, which makes the Alturas costlier than its predecessor. However, the Alturas 4WD AT variant does undercut its rivals, the Ford Endeavour, which costs Rs 32.81 lakh, and the Toyota Fortuner, which costs Rs 32.97 lakh for the 4WD automatic variants, significantly. This, coupled with the features, it offers should make the Alturas G4 a tempting proposition for buyers.

All prices mentioned are ex-showroom, Delhi.
