Pune-based SM Auto Engineering Pvt Ltd (SMA), a leading automotive component system manufacturer, has announced a technical collaboration with Taiwan-based Gotech Energy Co Ltd (GTE). The two companies will design, develop and manufacture advanced battery packs and battery management systems for the Indian two-, three- and four- wheeler electric vehicle (EV) market along with use for Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and stationary applications. They will also provide powertrain integration services.

SMA and GTE will set up their first state-of-the-art plant in Pune and it is slated to be ready by the second quarter of calendar year 2021. Together, the two companies will harness each other’s strengths to effectively meet industry requirements with world-class quality and cost effectiveness.

GTE was founded in 2010 by a group of technologists. It is now a part of the $4 billion electronic giant Supreme Group of Taiwan. Another promoter is DynaPack of Taiwan which is one of the leading battery manufacturers of rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs and supplier for tablets, laptops and e-bikes. Other than superior battery pack designing, the company has also have proven its strength in design and manufacturing of accurate and efficient energy management systems (BMS/EMS) with cloud management systems to fully connect to smart charging stations / swapping stations.

The technology also allows fleet operators to monitor the state of the battery pack remotely and take timely maintenance actions. The company has also developed battery swapping and battery charging stations. GTE has already proven its capability as it already supplies battery packs to OEMs in Europe and Asia.

GTE chairman Jackson Ka and managing director, Allen Chang, together commented:”The Indian EV market is in a nascent phase. The Indian government’s push towards electrification with relevant policies will propel the market to grow. By co-operating with SMA, the expert in automotive industry, we have full confidence to extend the EV business in India together.”

Sanjay Chopda, managing director, SMA added: “As we all know, EVs will play an important role in the coming future and India will be at the forefront of EV adoption. We see strong growth prospects in the EV sector and a need for providing our customers with reliable and high- quality EV components. To achieve this, we knew we have to manufacture locally and have the right technology provider. GTE has a solid technical base and that, coupled with the strengths of SMA, will help us be a top-notch supplier. Our plant in Pune will be a real testament to the ‘Make-in-India’ vision.”

SMA is a diversified system supplier of heat exchangers, two-wheeler chassis and swingarms, complete exhaust systems, body sub-assemblies, tubular and sheet metal assemblies, HDPE mudguards and spray suppressors.
