JSW Steel’s Vijaynagar plant wins Deming Prize

Said to be the largest single location integrated steel plant in the world to be awarded the prestigious Deming Prize for excellence in Total Quality Management (TQM).

JSW Steel’s Vijaynagar plant wins Deming Prize

JSW Steel, India's leading steel company and flagship business of the $13 billion (Rs 94,984 crore) JSW Group, has been awarded the Deming Prize for its Vijayanagar Works manufacturing unit.

The company says that its Vijayanagar unit is the largest single location integrated steel plant in the world to be awarded the prestigious Deming Prize for excellence in Total Quality Management (TQM). The Deming Application Prize is a world-renowned annual quality award presented by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) to companies that have achieved distinctive performance benchmarks through the application of TQM.

The Deming Prize will be formally presented to JSW Steel on November 14, 2018 in Tokyo. Commenting on this achievement, Seshagiri Rao, joint managing director, JSW Steel and Group CFO said, "JSW Steel is privileged to be honoured with the Deming Prize for our Quality Management at Vijayanagar Works steel plant. It is testimony of JSW Steel's uncompromising commitment to the TQM benchmarks we have set and achieved over the last several years. This coveted award complements our strong partnership with OEMs many of whom are Deming prize winners themselves. Our journey over the years has been exciting and this award is a tremendous inspiration for everyone at JSW Steel to move forward with the winning spirit and achieve new heights."

Dr Vinod Nowal, deputy managing director, JSW Steel said, "We are proud to have the Indian flag flying high at a global quality conclave. We designed the '0757' campaign to inculcate quality process ethics in all our employees right from those on the shop-floor to the top-floor at JSW Steel Vijayanagar Works. The Deming Prize is a testimony to our efforts in implementing a system-based approach in quality and process design to ensure constant improvements in operations. We will continue to focus on raising our benchmarks in these areas going forward."

JSW Steel is a leading integrated steel company in India with an installed steel-making capacity of 18 MTPA. JSW Steel's plant at Vijayanagar in Karnataka is the largest single location steel producing facility in India and the world’s sixth largest with a production capacity of 12 MTPA.
