Bajaj Auto has announced that its Chakan plant, near Pune, has become “the first Indian automotive OEM to receive the prestigious Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (Advanced Special Award) for Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) achievement."

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) involves better utilisation of production, resources and alignment of all vectors towards excellence in manufacturing. Appraised by the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM), the award is presented to facilities that have achieved outstanding levels of productivity, product quality, cost reduction and company culture improvement.

Bajaj Auto’s statement says, “This award is in recognition of efforts and zeal exhibited by all our employees in their journey towards excellence.”

The Chakan plant, which has been operating since 1998, produces the Pulsar, Avenger and Dominar range of motorcycles along with all KTM models. The plant has a manufacturing capacity of 1.2 million units per annum.

What is TPM?
TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) is all about overall maintenance for manufacturing. It focuses on equipment and people, and is a maintenance method (maintenance technique) which improves productivity to achieve zero losses and reinforces production foundations.

TPM features:
- It works to reduce losses that obstruct equipment efficiency, and losses that obstruct the movement/task efficiency of people, which is related to this.

- It is a maintenance technique that all factory or company functions (Total) are engaged in.

- Reducing losses related to equipment and people will increase added value for production efficiency and time, and directly result in quality improvements, accident prevention and energy savings.
