Top 10 Scooters – June 2018 | Honda Activa reigns supreme, 125cc Suzuki Access, TVS NTorq gain traction

It is no surprise that the largest selling two-wheeler in June 2018 – the Honda Activa – continues to be the largest selling scooter too. Nevertheless, it is important to note that the difference between the despatches of the top two bestselling scooters has widened ever more over the last year.

While in June 2017, the Honda Activa outperformed the TVS Jupiter with 174,197 units, the most popular scooter brand outsold the latter with 232,565 units in June 2018. This underlines the sheer growth in the monthly volumes of the Honda Activa, which is clearly seen driving the scooter market in the month of June 2018.

HMSI despatched 292,294 Activa scooters last month, up 24.50 percent YoY. The TVS Jupiter recorded dispatches of 59,729 units, down 1.39 percent YoY.

The 110cc Honda Dio, popular among young collegians, is back at the No. 3 spot with sales of 40,738 units in June. The model has registered a YoY growth of 51.50 percent.

At No. 4 is Suzuki’s 125cc Access scooter, which has recorded sales of 38,338 units in June, up an impressive 44.61 percent YoY. The company is geared up to launch its global marque Burgman in its 125cc avatar for the domestic market later this month. While this will consolidate Suzuki’s position in the overall growing scooter market, it will further add up to its leadership in the 125cc scooter category, which is anticipated to pick up rapidly during FY2018-19 and FY2019-2020.

Hero MotoCorp’s 110cc Maestro, which saw sales of 32,189 units in June, down 17.09 percent YoY, is India’s fifth top selling scooter.

Honda’s 125cc Grazia, on the other hand, has reported despatches of 21,432 units last month, thereby ranking sixth in the Top 10 scooters list.

At No. 7 is Hero MotoCorp’s 110cc Duet, which did not perform as per the expectations of the company, fetching sales of 17,934 units in June, down 11.83 percent YoY. Notably, the Duet was positioned as a family scooter by Hero MotoCorp to take on the sub-category that sees the Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter and the Suzuki Access as the most popular scooter models.

The 113cc Yamaha Fascino is eighth in the list with sales of 17,216 units in June, up 7.44 percent YoY. The model has seen marginal increase in its demand, thanks to the new advertising campaigns by the company. Yamaha has also added a new variant to its Ray-ZR series – Street Rally – with an aim of boosting its demand in the months to come.

TVS Motor’s latest offering – the 125cc NTorq – has recorded despatches of 17,203 units in June, suggesting that the model is roughly performing as per the initial expectations of the company. TVS Motor had sold 14,695 units of the NTorq in May 2018. The company had set a roadmap to sell about 200,000 units of its NTorq in the first year of its launch. The scooter is aggressively priced at Rs 59,687 (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the many-first features that it offers.

Hero MotoCorp’s 102cc Pleasure continues to fetch the much-needed scooter volumes to the company. The model, which is targeted at female commuters, garnered sales of 13,632 units in June, thus ranking at the 10th position in the Top 10 scooters list.

With new 125cc scooters lined up for launch in the near future, it would be interesting to watch out how the existing top sellers perform in the coming months. Stay tuned.
