Volvo Auto India has launched the petrol variant of the V40 Cross Country in India priced at Rs 27 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). This pricing is part of the carmaker's strategy to sell 2,000 units in CY2015. In 2014, it sold 1,300 units.

Badged T4, the car now gets a 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine which develops 177bhp and 24.5kgm of torque mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and comes equipped with start-stop function.

Like the diesel variant, the V40 Cross Country T4 also gets Volvo’s City Safe Tech which pre-charges the brakes to act faster in case of an impending collision. Other features offered as standard are traction and stability control, active bending bi-xenon headlights which move 15 degrees in either direction, daytime-running LEDs, curtain airbags, driver knee airbag and whiplash protection for the front seats which allows the seats to move with the occupants in the event of a collision, to lessen the impact.

The V40 Cross Country T4 also gets a choice between two-tone or single-tone leather interiors, an eight-speaker music system, powered driver seat, rear parking sensors, keyless entry and go, and a Brake Energy Regeneration system to help charge the car battery.

The T4, like the diesel, gets a digital instrument cluster with an in-built 8.0-inch TFT screen with three modes — Elegance, Eco and Performance.

In the Elegance mode, the display remains simple with the highlighted needle for the speedometer. This mode also shows a gearshift indicator if the vehicle is used in manual mode.

In Eco Mode, the display is similar to that in the Elegance mode but includes an Eco Meter which shows real time and average fuel consumption, and also displays an 'eco' symbol if the vehicle is driven efficiently.

In Performance Mode, the centre dial transforms into a tachometer with a digital readout for the speed in the centre. This mode also shows the power — used and available.

However, the T4 misses out on certain features that are available on the diesel variant. The T4 does not get a powered front passenger seat, sunroof and front parking sensors, while the 17-inch alloys from the diesel are replaced by 16-inch on the petrol, and the rear camera is now an option instead of standard.

Tomas Ernberg, managing director, Volvo Auto India, said,"Buoyed by the growing acceptance of the V40 Cross Country since June 2013 when we launched it here, we have now decided to bring in the petrol variant at a very competitive pricing.”

Volvo says the all-new V40 has received the top five-star rating in the Euro NCAP collision test.
