Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) today launched its premium Power 99 petrol in Mumbai. The fuel, which has an octane rating of 99, which is currently the highest octane-rated petrol in India, is targeted at high-end cars and two-wheelers to help increase their engine life. Regular petrol in India has an octane rating of 91 to 95.

Kanuru Srinivas, chief general manager - Retail, West Zone, HPCL, launched the new fuel at the Auto Care Centre, NS Road retail outlet in the presence of D N Krishnamurthy, chief general manager; B Sundar Babu, general manager – Sales; Saroj Behera, DGM - Mumbai Retail Region, and other company personnel.

According to the company, due to the higher octane number, the ability of Power 99 to withstand compression without detonating is more. Power 99 can withstand a greater rise in temperature during the compression stroke of an internal combustion engine without auto-ignition, which will then result in lower engine knocking and damage. This makes it an ideal fuel choice for high-performance cars and two-wheelers. It is also claimed to reduce equipment failure, does not contain any harmful heavy metals and reduces emissions due to superior combustion of the fuel.

HPCL has launched Power 99 earlier in Bangalore and Pune, where it has received a good market response. The company says even though Power 99 is meant for high-end cars and two-wheelers, it can also be used in all types of vehicles.

HPCL states that sales resarch has revealed that 93 percent of motorists in India use normal or regular petrol and the balance rest 7 percent use premium petrol.
