Global sales of Suzuki Swift reach four million units, half of them in India

Global sales of Suzuki Swift reach four million units, half of them in India

The Suzuki Swift, which was launched as a global strategic model in 2004, has reached cumulative worldwide sales of four million units in August 2014. The landmark was reached nine years and nine months since the start of sales.

The Swift, which reflects Suzuki’s expertise in compact and fun-to-drive cars, was first produced and sold in Japan in November 2004. In the following year, production and distribution began in Hungary, India and China. Full-model change was made in 2010, and production and distribution also began in Thailand in March 2012.

The Swift’s India innings has been particularly good. Ever since its launch in 2005, the Swift steadily increased its sales in line with the market expansion due to economic growth by adding diesel variants and sedans (like the Dzire).

The Swift, has been a game-changer in the Indian automobile market, effectively redefining the concept of a hatchback in India. Until the Swift came along in May 2005, hatchbacks were expected to be basic modes of transportation with few frills and little emotion. The premium hatchback segment did not exist at the time. Ford tried to create one with the Fusion as did Hyundai with the Getz but customers didn’t warm to the idea of paying big money for a hatchback. It was the Swift that completely redefined not just the face of Maruti but what a premium hatchback should be. It pioneered a segment, which today forms the largest chunk of the Indian car market.

The Swift’s sporty styling, zippy performance and affordability immediately struck a chord with customers. But it was at an emotional level that the Swift connected with its passionate owners to give it a cult following. That it’s been the best-selling premium hatch for nine years on the trot is proof enough of its fan following in India.

Of the four million Swifts sold till now, the India market accounts for approximately half of them. Also, approximately 19 percent were sold in Europe and 11 percent were sold in Japan. The Swift is currently produced in eight countries worldwide and is sold in more than 140 countries and regions around the world.
