German retro sports car brand Wiesmann is to return in 2018 with a new model, powered by a BMW M division-sourced V8 engine.

The brand made the announcement on its website, following an announcement earlier this year about the appointment of a new CEO, Mario Spitzner.

The only details of the new model to be announced relate to the engine, and that it will spawn a relaunched Wiesmann brand, with more than one model in the pipeline.

Wiesmann also announced that the pre-development phase of the car has been completed. An accompanying video of the brand’s rebirth tells viewers to “expect the unexpected”, while showing glimpses of what could be the first car of the brand’s new era.

“Signing this contract with our preferred partner BMW is a milestone for Wiesmann Sports Cars," said Spitzner. "In the pre-development phase, which has now been concluded, we worked together extremely well and we are delighted to be able to collaborate with the BMW Group.”

In its previous era, Wiesmann used BMW six-cylinder engines to power its MF models, until the introduction in 2003 of the GT MF4, which used BMW's 4.8-litre V8, and the MF 5, which used the M5's 5.0-litre V10, before the company shut its doors in 2014. The brand’s partnership with BMW began in 1993.
