Volkswagen Group honours 46 of its best apprentices worldwide

The Volkswagen Group has presented its ‘Best Apprentice Awards 2017’ to its best apprentices from all over the world, including India, honoring their outstanding performance and professional competence.

The prizes for the 46 young talents from 20 countries were presented by the chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, Matthias Müller, the Member of the Board of Management with responsibilty for Human Resources, Organisation and IT, Dr. Karlheinz Blessing, and the president of the Global Group Works Council, Bernd Osterloh.

Among the winners, Sagar Salunke, a mechatronics technician working for Volkswagen India, bagged the prize. He has been undergoing his German dual style apprenticeship in Mechatronics at the Volkswagen Academy located at the Pune Plant in India.

On receiving the Best Apprentice Award 2017, Sagar said, “The last three years at Volkswagen Academy in Pune, India have truly laid the foundation of my career. I am confident that the learnings and the experience gathered during my apprenticeship will help me grow professionally.”

Also for the first time, young talents from Ducati in Italy and MAN Truck & Bus in Turkey were among the award-winners. The 10 young women and 36 young men were honored at a ceremony held at the CongressPark in Wolfsburg yesterday.

“Those who receive Best Apprentice Awards and are therefore among the best apprentices in the Volkswagen Group throughout the world have good reason to be confident and courageous," said Müller at the award ceremony. "And courage is perhaps the most important characteristic that we need, as people and as a company, in an era of fundamental changes." Müller congratulated the award-winners and added: "We need people like you to help bring our Group forward with intelligence, determination and passion."

Blessing said: "In future, first-class training and qualifications will become even more important as we face dramatic progress in technology which will result in marked changes in our world and the world of the automobile." He called upon the budding talents to grasp digitalization as an opportunity. He encouraged them: "You really matter! Stay aware and open-minded. Do not stop learning and developing new knowledge. We need intelligent highly trained people like you who do their work with a clear head, a critical spirit and skilled craftsmanship."

Osterloh said: "The 46 apprentices from 43 locations are a sign of our success. As exemplary young talents, they represent the future of the Volkswagen Group throughout the world. Our dual vocational training system has long been adopted as a model by most Group companies. With this model, we are laying the foundation for the future competitive edge of our company and we are also assuming social responsibility at our plants. The young women and men honored today show that money spent on initial and further training is well-invested in a number of ways."

Thirty-five of the award-winners had already been honored in their home countries for their commitment to their companies and for their knowledge and skills in their training vocations. Fifteen of the Best Apprentice Award winners will be starting a degree course to develop their knowledge and skills in greater depth. In addition, three young people will be taking part in the ‘Wanderjahre’ (years abroad) personnel development program. They will be working for a year at a Group location in another country. Two of the award-winners from Germany will be receiving two years of individual support in their professional family within the ‘talent group for young specialists’.

This year's Best Apprentice Award was the 17th of its kind presented by the Volkswagen Group and a total of 477 apprentices have been honored since 2001. The group is currently training about 19,000 young women and men in about 60 vocations and 50 dual courses of study.
