M&M digs into the earthmover market
After tilling fields, carrying people and hauling load, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) will now dig earth! After tilling fields, carrying people and hauling load, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) will now dig earth! The $7.1 billion group has entered the fast growing and profitable construction equipment industry with its new EarthMaster – a backhoe loader. Rs 300 crore has been invested into the project which was under development for 36 months. M&M is looking at picking up a fair slice of the 25,000 units per annum market, currently dominated by British manufacturer JCB. According to Dr Pawan Goenka, president, Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors, M&M should garner a five to seven percent market share in the backhoe loader market with the EarthMaster. The Indian backhoe loader market (the largest in the world) is pegged at Rs 4,000 crore, which is estimated to touch Rs 7,500 crore with 44,000 units in annual sales by 2014. Kairas Vakharia, business head – Construction Equipment, M&M, expects the backhoe loader market to grow 15 percent annually. Currently, JCB is the market leader by far with a 75 percent share of the market. M&M will now meet new competitors like L&T Case and Telcon in its new business. |
